Bio
and Research
I worked as a professional
ecologist in private industry and for the United States Government
before joining the faculty at Jacksonville University in 1980, serving
as a Senior Scientist in private industry and as the Team Leader of the
National Power Plant Team for the Department of Interior. In those
capacities, I managed multidisciplinary projects in geographic
localities throughout the United States working toward solutions for
ecological problems.
I have designed and
implemented new courses at JU in Human Ecology, Ichthyology, and
Vertebrate Biology, and have also taught Introductory Biology and
Zoology. I have obtained grants to strengthen the introductory courses
in science and mathematics and worked on the project to enhance the
biology major funded by the Association of American Colleges.
I have served on the
Board of Directors of Tree Hill Nature Center, the Theodore Roosevelt
Preserve, and the Heart and Lung Institute at St. Vincent's Medical
Center and am currently serving as a Florida Governor appointee to the
Nongame Wildlife Advisory Council. I taught in the Envirovet Summer
Institute during the Summer of 2000. This workshop was an introduction
to environmental concerns and data collection techniques for
Veterinarians from around the world. I recognize the valuable
role of internships and research experiences at the undergraduate level
and have worked diligently to establish and strengthen relationships
with private and governmental organizations to increase these
opportunities for JU students. I have also served as the faculty
advisor for Beta Beta Beta and ECO.
I coordinated
the establishment of
the Pre-Med Program here at JU. I
have worked to improve this and other science programs through a
strengthened Undergraduate Research Program, equipment gifts from
outside donors, and cash gifts and grants to enhance laboratory and
research equipment at JU. I have served as liaison with Mayo Clinic and
other medical facilities to strengthen undergraduate research
opportunities for JU students. I established the Undergraduate Research
Advisory Council at JU and chaired the committee which interfaces with
this council.
My research interests are
skewed toward the ecosystem approach to environmental management and
awareness. Most recently I worked on an ecosystem approach to the
preservation of the Connecticut River Watershed. My students and I
recently relocated a population of gopher tortoises on the JU campus
and I am currently involved in an ecological study of Sherman’s fox
squirrel at White Oak Plantation.
