A variety of marine
invertebrate organisms, such as this sea star and sea urchin, are
showcased to elementary and middle-school students in the "Traveling
Tidepool" exhibit sponsored by SOS.

Student
Oceanic Society (SOS)
Most marine science students become
involved in the Student
Oceanic Society (SOS). SOS is an active organization that sponsors the
"Traveling Tidepool," a collection of living marine invertebrates that
are taken to elementary and middle-school classrooms. The organization
also assists in annual shoreline and campus clean-up activities,
exhibits at the Jacksonville Earth Day celebration, and provides judges
for local science fairs. |

Kingfish Tournament
The
BellSouth Greater Jacksonville
Kingfish Tournament, held each year in July, is the largest
kingfish tournament in the country. JU students have the opportunity to
be trained to assist during the tournament by weighing the kingfish,
validating the freshness of the catch, and performing standard
morphological measurements. These data are used to better understand
the population size structure of kingfish utilizing Northeast Florida's
coast.

Annual
Beach Sweep
During
the third Saturday in September, volunteers from Jacksonville
University gather at local
beaches to participate
in the Ocean
Conservancy's International Coastal Cleanup™ (ICC).
During this event, students and faculty pick up trash and
record valuable information about the amounts, types, and sources of
debris found.

Community
Service
The faculty, staff, and students of Jacksonville University are proud
to be a productive and integral part of their local community in
Northeast Florida. Each JU student devotes 25 hours of volunteer
time to community service. Service activities include
volunteering at local schools, participating in shoreline clean-ups,
providing support at local fishing tournaments, teaching during Girls Inc. summer camps at JU, and
suppling exhibits
and assistance at local festivals. |
